Darren Waterston’s otherworldly compositions trespass effortlessly into “The Sublime” with bold colors and atmospheric abstractions that drip with emotion. Waterston magnifies beauty; creating not replicas of the world in front of him, but compositions that are brimming with a distilled, abstracted version of a place. In some compositions, recognizable forms like a moon or a mountain range are featured alongside nonrepresentational patterning or stunningly precise graphic elements. The familiar anchors and pulls us into the fantasy. A tree balances in the foreground. A flock of butterflies float across a page. These are works to get lost in, to escape to: to remind us that The Landscape – whether real or imagined – is a place of wonder.
